study

For the record, I think the bass guitar is the bees knees. A "sexy" bassline (in my opinion of what I think is sexy musically), well, I like them. I will leave it at that.

ANYWAY..

This particular Death Cab For Cutie song has a bassline that I like quite a bit.

For your afternoon listening pleasure:

Uhh were you aware that Ben Gibbard has a solo album (with Andrew Kenny)?? Yup, I didn't know until a couple days ago. And it is wonderful.

I was listening to my Rocky Votolato playlist on Pandora, and this song came on..

I stopped.. and was like... Whaaaaa Ben Gibbard??? Not a Death Cab for Cutie song??

I'm finally sitting down to do my first listen through the album. I'm almost done. It is the perfect fall Sunday morning album. Go make your coffee, tea, chai, cocktail, whatever gets you through the morning, and spin this album for the soundtrack.

In other news, pumpkin spice Eggo waffles are TASTY. The sample lady at the store conned me into getting them. Perfect snack for this fall Sunday morning chai Ben Gibbard listening party.

[smart] phone

So I was listening to my I Simply Remember My Favorite Things playlist, and a song by The Format came on.. so I started listening to the rest of their stuff that I have (a haven't listened to much) and I am really digging it.

It was this song that came on. Otherwise I can't really pick a favorite because I haven't heard them often enough.

But earlier today I was jamming to this Jimmy Eat World song. And I'm sorry, I just have to say this (and I don't think it counts as negative, per se) but I feel like Jimmy Eat World has kind of gotten the short end of the stick in that The Middle is played (and overplayed and overplayed) to the point that I kind of feel.. a tinge of judgment from others when I say "Oh yeah, I like Jimmy Eat World." Is it just me? Anyway, I think that the album Chase This Light is really really good. My favorite of theirs. Beats out the album Futures, which I also really liked. I'm really bad at keeping up on new music (main stream labels anyway).. must work on this. Come to think of it, I have Invented and I really need to start listening to it.. geeeez. Well, I've got my night cut out for me!

Current song: Jimmy Eat World - Heart Is Hard To Find

Also, I thought this was funny.. the Genre column on my Itunes describes Jimmy Eat World a handful of ways... Alternative, Pop, Rock, Emo..

nails

Two observations this moment:

1. Dance parties make everything all better. Shake yo groove thang.
2. My band t-shirt collection has grown exponentially in the last year. I like this. A lot.

notebook

Starting the day off with The Beatles.

Didn't realize how many opportunities there is to say "ooooo" and do jazz hands during Beatles songs... but I'm only two songs in and I think I did it at least 5 times. That's a good start to the morning if there ever was one.

Listening to 1, in particular. Such a good culmination of a bunch of different albums.

Seriously, if I was stranded on a deserted island and could bring only one band's music with me, it'd be The Beatles. And maybe a newly framed Abbey Road record (on my list of things to do).

Current song: The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand

angel

Woke up with this Matt Pond PA song stuck in my head. Rarely do I go to a show and fall in love instantly with a band I've never heard of, but this was one of those times. I wrote about it a little, below with regards to the Rocky Votolato show.

Seems my sometimes "all or nothing" attitude expands to music. I have this joke that I decide within the first 10 seconds of the first song, whether or not I like a band. It's true and not.. I either get that feeling of connection to it, or I don't. Sometimes it develops, most of the time it doesn't. But when I get that feeling, I really like the music. And Matt Pond PA was one of those times.

paper

I feel like I'm stuck in a musical rut. But a good one..

For the past few days this is all I've been listening to:

1. Taylor Swift
2. White Light Riot (new album, woo!)
3. Death Cab For Cutie
4. Motion City Soundtrack

And really, that spans a few genres..

1. You've got your pop-country, which no, is not the same thing as country. :) Turns out there really isn't a pop-country genre, so I'm making one up. Take that, society!
2. [local!] And your self-proclaimed "Brit-pop" indie rock.
3. And how would I classify dcfc.. see, I hate genre-lizing music.. I feel like I'm putting it into a box.. Wikipedia says dcfc is alternative.. not sure if I agree with it, but I guess I'll go with it. For now.
4. [local!] And your pop-punk. Which, until about 2 months ago I never would have pegged MCS as being punk, which I guess it is.. I guess I can say "I like punk music." Not sure how that makes me feel. I guess it makes me feel like I'm 15 years old again and listening to MxPx, Saves the Day, and New Found Glory..

If I could bike and listen to music without getting hit and killed by a car, I would.. for now I'll go tie the headphones to my tanktop and turn it up as loud as it goes. Get out and enjoy this sunshine, people!

Current soung: Death Cab For Cutie - Stay Young, Go Dancing
(seriously this song is on repeat. so good!)

coffee

Okay so I got the newest Death Cab For Cutie album today. And I am LOVING it. I really like dcfc. But this new album is so good! And this song.. ugh so good! Pure happiness.

Cause when she sings I hear a symphony
And I'm swallowed in sound as it echoes through me
I'm renewed, oh how I feel alive and through autumn's advancing
We'll stay young, go dancing

Homework and A.A.Bondy . Never spent much time listening to him. Another example of music I've had on my Itunes for a while but haven't explored. Really great homework music.. acoustic.. melodic.. loving it.

money

So I am falling madly, deeply, inevitably in love with M.Ward.

The first I had ever really heard much of M. Ward was when 4onthefloor covered Magic Trick (which I came to love instantly).. but never listened much to him beyond that.. (and for the record I like the 4OTF version much better.)

So I started today. And well, my heart has been stolen.

Okay so that's a little dramatic, but seriously. I am loving it.

I just realized I totally forgot to write about seeing Motion City Soundtrack and Weezer at the state fair. How could I forget that??

Maybe you'll get lucky tonight and I'll write about it.

Wow. Talk about a "that's what she said". Seriously, I don't know where those things come from.

alfredo

You guys. I have too much to write about. (I like that I can write as if I'm talking to you, because now I know people read this! Still happy about that.)

Okay okay I'll just get started.

Bon Iver
Uhh helloooo wow. First of all, the Orpheum is gorgeous. It's got that going for it automatically. Second of all, Bon Iver rocks my socks off. So talk about a good combination. Oh and the fact that my seats were in the FRONT ROW. That has never happened. It's actually a sort of funny story too.

So I waited in line at the on-sale in June. They went on sale at 12 noon, I got there around 10:30am. I thought for sure there would be a TON of people. But I was about 30th in line. And since they were scheduled for two nights, that made me about 15th in line. It was fun waiting, I always have fun waiting at on-sales. I think it's exciting. Oh and I get a little pissed off like at Taylor Swift when there were MEN there who were OBVIOUSLY scalpers just looking to make a pretty penny. I may have already ranted about that. Okay, anyway. So this one was fun, I made friends with some.. hmm 15 year olds? They were two boys, best friends, and adorably so into music. We had a great conversation about Fleet Foxes and Death Cab for Cutie. And The Decemberists.

So the minute they go on sale, people start getting really tense. We're so serious about "Hurry up! There's an open window! Come on!" .. and then 5 seconds after you have your tickets you breathe a huge sigh of relief. Or disappointment I suppose. But this was awesome, I said "2 of the best you've got." and the guy's like.. do do do.... 3rd row! And I said HOLY SH** can I get two more?? He said sure.. do do doo.... 4th row! I just about died. Just about. I think I jumped up and down a few times. I tend to get animated. And only strangers get to partake since I do on-sales by myself. Prime people-watching.

So I got out and called my best friend and freaked out on the phone for a while. We decided two of our friends could have the other two tickets. We knew a handful of people going to so we made a night of it.

But here's the kicker.. tickets in the first 10 rows have to be picked up at will call, so these past months I've not known exactly where our seats would be. We get there on Wednesday for the show and the lady hands them to me.. and it says Row 1 ...

So I saw Bon Iver from the front row. It was my first time ever seeing anything from the front row. (and I thought Taylor Swift from the 5th row was good.. hellooo).

Bon Iver was unbelievable. 9 people. Piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, 4 types of saxophone, 2 violins, 1 clarinet, 2 drummers, 1 percussionist with a whole slew of things to play as instruments, including beatboxing.

I'm having a hard time coming up with words to describe it. It was incredible. I closed my eyes to take a mental soul picture of it so I would never forget the experience. It sounded so amazing, and it was hard to believe it was all being played right in front of me.

Not sure how I'm supposed to write about other shows after that one... but I'll try.

Rocky Votolato
He's one of my favorite singer-songwriters. Back in.. hmm 2005ish, the guy I was dating at the time heard White Daisy Passing on the radio (which interestingly enough I have heard only maybe once on the radio since) and told me about it.. he said "Some Rocky .. guy." Got his discography and loved it. I've seen him... 5 times now I think. Last April I saw him twice in one week.. once in the cities and then in Washington DC. Last time was October at the Triple Rock. But I've always only seen him acoustic. Which is really my preference. It's like Dashboard Confessional.. if only Chris Carrabba would come to his senses and continue to make music like The Swiss Army Romance.. but I digress.

Anyway, this time Rocky had a band with him. And I liked it.. however, it was at the Entry, and that's.. I don't know. Just not the venue for him. Not sure T-rock was either. But.. maybe the Fine Line. Anyway, the crowd liked him but they might have been there more for the headliner. But I had a good number of people standing around me singing along too.

He did this thing where he let fans pick his playlist for the tour. We voted. (Of course I voted, come on, let's be real.) So he played lots of the goodies. Specifically my faves, White Daisy Passing, Makers, Portland is Leaving, Red River, etc. etc. Go get his tunes, you will looooove them. Well, if you know what's good for you, you will.

(there was a girl with big hair obstructing the picture. obviously.)

Matt Pond PA
Never had heard him before.. but this was the headliner that Rocky opened for. I only stayed for a few songs because I was heading to another show, but WOW. He was really my gig. (I've started saying "That's not really my gig." if I don't like something.. dunno where that came from.) I'm bummed I didn't stay longer but I had to get to the next show I'll write about. But tonight I downloaded his discography and wow. I really really love it. Acousticy, pianoy, shaker, pleasant voice. Sounds like a recipe for LOVE.

Koo Koo Kangaroo
FUN, sweaty sweaty fun as always. Grown-up dance party. Fantastic. When else can I sing about which sections of the alphabet I love, or what my favorite color is, or how much I want to be a pirate, or which dinosaur I like best? If you haven't been to one of their shows, you owe it to yourself to go. Oh and you get to do the hokey pokey, but it's called Shake Yo Foot. It's a blast. Their new album comes out on Tuesday and is pay-what-you-want. (which I love that people are doing these days, what a cool idea.)

Halloween, Alaska
We Are the Willows and Communist Daughter opened. I'd never seen either and liked We Are the Willows a lot. It's the lead singer who used to lead sing for Red Fox Grey Fox.

Halloween, Alaska was great as always. Great crowd, great vibe. I'm not super familiar with their music, but the lyrics that I do know are really good. Yet another example of fantastic local music.

Okay so that's the skinny from this past week. Now onto homework and maybe icing my legs after biking the Urban Assault Ride today.. cheers!

ticket

Know what'd be nice? If I didn't have a full time job and full time grad school so I could write on here more often.

I mean, well. Not really. I love those things. But I have things to write about! Such as Bon Iver from the front row.

And I like writing on here. And turns out people actually read it.. which is neat, and I actually feel sort of honored or something. Thanks y'all for reading this! Makes my day.

I will say this. Current jams non-stop have been The Head and The Heart as well as Delta Spirit. I'd highly suggest going out and getting ALL of their music. And then listening to each album straight through. Especially for the head and the heart, there's a lot of bleed-ins on that one. I think that's what they're called. Well, if they aren't, that's what I'm calling them anyway. Deal with it.

Uhh what else. Oh yeah, Bon Iver from the front row. NBD. I'll need more time to write about that one. I'll maybe even tease you with a picture or two (or three).

oatmeal

So I'm a Christian. Not one of those judge-everyone-homophobic-closed-mined ones. More of a love-your-neighbor-as-yourself-amazing-grace ones.

And I love love love some particular Christian music. I've been listening to my I Will Worship You Until the Very End playlist today. That's a Darlene Zschech song.

So I thought I'd do a post about some of my favorite Christian musicians and songs.

First one that came on this morning brings me waaaay back... to church camp days. Joel led worship at the came I went to for a few years, and the music was my favorite part of camp. Did I mention he won a grammy?
Traveling Light - Joel Hansen and Sara Groves
*I found my freedom now and I'm traveling light*

Next, and I can't just pick one song for them, but I guess I will.. Jars of Clay.
In particular, this song: Fly (it's live, and old, so enjoy the clothing selection, and there's a little story at the beginning, but it's actually good, so listen to that too.)
*Hold still, let your hand melt into mine*

Speaking of clothes, I wonder how hard we will laugh at the clothes we're wearing today, 20 years from now. My kids will be like, "Mom, why did men wear girl's pants?" "I don't know honey, I really don't know."

Okay so I'm going to go the economical route and just list some more. Most of these go waaaay back for me.

Aaron Shust
Caedmon's Call
Chris Tomlin
David Crowder Band
Jesus Culture
Newsboys (they've changed some members since the days when I started to like them)
Relient K
Skillet (they've become more.. metal.. than when I first liked them)
Switchfoot
Tenth Avenue North

So that's a start. And now don't be surprised when I write posts about particular Christian songs. And if you've ever been hurt by a Christian, trust me, we all have. But we aren't all like that. Love God, love others. That simple.

you're already home where you feel love

Well I should be writing a final paper for grad school that's due on Thursday, but I'm hitting a roadblock so I'll write on here instead.

Friday night.
4onthefloor and Readygoes.
The Fine Line
I love love love the Fine Line. Okay, sometimes I don't, especially when a show is sold out, then I hate the Fine Line. But for a dancey show, I love it. And Friday was ALL dance. (PS I have a new-found appreciation for CAPS so.. just get ready for that.) Anyway, danced my butt right off and it was A-mazing. It also helps to have a group of friends who LOVE to dance, so that made it really fun. Loving the new Readygoes songs as well. Highly anticipating their next release.

Saturday night.
4onthefloor, Trampled By Turtles, Willie Nelson
Bayfront Park, Duluth.
Willie Nelson. Outside. Hello. It was amazing. I can't believe I'll get to tell my kids I saw Willie Nelson! I joked for a few weeks now about hoping to get on his tour bus to smoke with him (since I never have so this would be the one time I would) but that unfortunately did not happen (surprised?). It was a fun joke though. It was unreal to be swaying back and forth outside, singing along to On the Road Again and You Were Always On My Mind. I called my parents and they sang along over the phone. My mom likes to live vicariously through my music experiences, I love it.

But people LOVED 4onthefloor, which was really neat. So fantastic to see friends being successful and hearing people say "I hadn't heard of them til tonight and I LOVED their music!" Trampled By Turtles was great as well. Can't go wrong there. Had a grand old time dancing around in my red galoshes. Just such an amazing night. Saw Erik Koskinen afterward which was a great end to the night. (Note to self: Red galoshes went over REALLY well...)

Sunday night.
Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles, The Head and the Heart
Varsity Theatre
Okay, so the Varsity is my favorite venue. Has been a bit stuffy (warm) lately but it also has been 100* outside so let's be real.
But this show. Wow. I had never seen Lucy Michelle before and I LOVED it. Her cutesy voice and contagious energy was fantastic. I bought her latest album last night. I don't do that often. That should indicate to you how much I enjoyed it. The album is good, though her live performance far outshines it.
The Head and the Heart. I had heard them first on The Current (thank God for local radio, I am a proud Sustaining Member). I heard their acoustic guitar and piano on the song Lost In My Mind and fell in love instantly. Head over heels. But this show.. Holy crap. Where to start. The show was unreal. The crowd was AMAZING. I feel like I've been at a lot of shows lately where the crowd is too busy talking to get into the show (I still get in to the show, screw the crowd, I'm not there for them anyway, it's just me and the music), and there was a bit of that too-much-talking business during LM, but it went away for The Head and the Heart.
The energy that was exchanged between the band and the crowd was something else. They were truly a show. You could just tell that they love what they do so much. Also, this was the last show on a 7-month tour so I think there was a bit of them going-out-with-a-bang. To our benefit, entirely. They sounded exquisite. Full of passion and just.. real. (That video above.. the fun they're having at the end, is like the fun they were having on stage last night.) Their album is great, but this show.. I won't forget it. One of my favorite shows I've ever seen at Varsity. And I've seen LOTS of show there.

Overall, it was an unforgettable, memory-filled weekend with friends and music. Best weekend this summer. And there have been some rivals.

I'm so blessed to call this state and these cities HOME.

I can't stop listening to the new Bon Iver album. I know I've written about it approximately 23 times, but it's just that good. Oh, and let's not forget For Emma, Forever Ago, another magnificent Bon Iver album. I can't tell you how excited I am to hear them live in September.

lists

So I'm doing a bunch of work from home (wahoo! love it) and I decided to listen to ALBUMS from my Ipod instead of just songs.. or shuffle.. or playlists.. just pick an album.

I picked one that I hadn't heard it forever. Literally, forever.

Pedro the Lion - Achilles Heel

Whoa, and to be honest, I must have been living under a rock.. I was not aware that PTL was Dave Bazan. Who am I? Am I really living? How did I not know that??

I heard of PTL when I was .. crap like 16 or something.. and I don't know a whole lot of Dave Bazan's stuff.. so I guess I never connected the dots.

Well. Tonight is a night of discovery. And hard, rewarding work.

grapes

So I don't write on here often enough. I have these mini-epiphanies of "Oh yeah I should write about that!" and then I don't. Working on that.

So here I am writing!

My homework soundtrack this afternoon has been DeYarmond Edison. They are not a band anymore, and I have (*tear) never seen them live. It has been a splendid afternoon though. I highly recommend both albums.

In similar news, did I mention that I have 3rd row tickets to see Bon Iver? Sorry, I'm bragging. I'm very excited. I have waited in line for tickets a few times recently and had it majorly pay off.

Saw Taylor Swift last month from the 5th row. It was spectacular. Not even exaggerating. She has set changes, dress changes, a ton of musicians, even violins.. she played piano, guitar, banjo, and sang. I have a bit of a girl crush on her. And I'm okay with that. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was my little 7 year old cousin's first concert. I let her know it's all downhill from there.. 5th row is pretty dang good. As of then it was the best seat I've ever had, until this Bon Iver show came along.

What else what else...

I was a part of the new album by my friends The Farewell Circuit last night.. We did gang vocals. Can't wait til I'm famous from that. (Yeah, right).. but it was really fun. They're great guys, and their music.. wonderful.

..Other than that.. living the good life and seeing shows... at least 2 if not 4 nights a week. That's just how I do!

My friend Gabe (from 4onthefloor) and friends from The Farewell Circuit covered this song tonight.

record store day 2011

Today was Record Store Day and I went to my fave record store, the Electric Fetus and finally bought The Head and The Heart! I've listened to the album twice straight through and I love it. Wish I would have bought tickets to their show with Iron and Wine in June but I waited too long and now it's sold out. Sad day.

On a brighter note.. hit up some thrift stores and found one with 3 for $1 cds. Hello! I picked up a Delirious? album that I didn't have, as well as a random band called Rebuttal because their album design was cool and they're from Minnesota (yes, those standards alone with entice me to buy someone's music, take note of that), and also, most excitingly, a Sondre Lerche album. Umm, how have I not listened to this until now?? I have been missing out. This is completely pleasant. I'm hooked.

Oh and a Romantica album for $1 for my parents. Score!

So go support your local record store, and your local musicians. Music makes the world go round. <3

snow

So a few mornings ago I started a new thing that I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do from now on.

I started dancing. Now don't get me wrong, I frequently bust a move. Anywhere. Often in public. Mostly on my own, but I also enjoy doing Don't You Feel It Too. Check it out, it's super fun and exhilarating, and freeing.

But this is something different. Of course I'm always listening to music, and mornings are no exception. But now I more consciously have a dance party. I get my groove on. Serious groove. Not just a head-nod. We're talking all-out dancing, booty shaking, hip-action, arm-flailing dancing. The good stuff.

And let me tell you, I don't think there is any one other thing that brings me such joy instantly. It has changed my mornings. It wakes me up and gets the juices flowing. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow morning. Which says a lot, I'm not usually a joy to be around in the morning (especially not early).

So if you need a little somethin' somethin' to get you going in the morning, dance. Groove. Swing. Shake it. Shake it like a salt shaker if you like.

But man, I am loving this.

Tonight my room mate Kate and I did Don't You Feel It Too on the walk back from a coffee shop by our house. Now, it's winter outside. And with the whole grad-school thing, I have really heavy textbooks to read (including my DSM that just came in the mail today, woo!), so my backpack was more than a little heavy. So walking with a heavy backpack + dancing + winter = GREAT workout. And the joy it brings.. unbelievable. Not to mention the smiles on peoples' faces walking/driving by. Such good stuff.

So dance. Do it. Let it all out. Shake what your momma gave you. You'll be surprised how good it'll make you feel.
