I seriously have too many things I want to do. (And well, need to do right now.. being homework, but I think I'll write in here instead.)
Recent favorites:
Jeremy Messersmith. I've written about him before. Wow. Saw him at First Ave last week and it was phenomenal. String section and all. I can listen to his albums on repeat (and currently am). I love all the references to different things related to the Cities. I love these cities so much.
Death Cab For Cutie. Also on repeat. Though listening to them for too long makes me feel a bit depressed. Plans is my favorite album, hands-down. It's great driving music. I like the words he chooses to rhyme. And the syncopation at different points.
The Lighthouse and The Whaler. Not sure if I've written about them before. Jess and I found them in NYC one night. We were going to see Tamarama. (long story short it's a nickname for me, and when I saw there was a band with that name, I needed to see them, obvi.) So when I was in NY last time I saw that they were playing at Pianos. TLATW opened for them. I was blown away. They remind me a lot of The Farewell Circuit, one of my local faves.
Cloud Cult. I haven't listened to them on repeat yet, they're one of those bands I have to listen to a little of, and then move on. They have a very distinct sound, especially the lead singer's voice. I saw them at the Lowertown Music Fest at the end of July. It was fantastic. They sounded so great, and put on a really awesome show. They have a couple people doing paintings on stage as well, and they auction off the paintings later. Love that they're local.
The Farewell Circuit. As I mentioned earlier, they're one of my local faves. They recently put out a new ep, Brothers Eyes. They have a melodic, very pleasant sound. Just saw them last night at the Turf Club. Unfortunately the stage was too small, so they didn't have the vibrophone. As always, a great show.
Dashboard Confessional. I still have remnants of a teenage crush on Chris Carrabba (just being honest). I don't care much for his new stuff. I've written about that before as well.. That I think it gets less and less like what I've liked of his, each new album he puts out. But what can I say. The Swiss Army Romance album and The Places You Have Come To Fear the Most album are two of my faves. Makes you think of those high school years where relationships matter oh-so-much and end and emo emo emo. But man, love it. I think I always will.
Rocky Votolato. Can't wait to see him in October. Speaking of, I need to remember to get a ticket. Mental note. He's a great singer/songwriter. I've liked him for about 5 years. Seen him 3 times. His music has great lyrics and a wonderful sound. He also puts on a great show. Anyone who can play guitar and harmonica at the same time gets props in my book.
Ok Go. Of course. Love them. On repeat frequently. They recently put out a new video. Crazy it already has some 4,000,000 views. So long as it's not sold out I'll be seeing them in October. I can't tell you how excited I am for that. They're dancey, and happy, and funny. I wrote about the Rock the Garden show. So awesome. They put on a really great show.
I should explain what I mean by "really great show". There's more to a show than just the music. It's an all-around performance, and they aren't playing music 100% of the time. A good show has musicians who are funny or engaging between songs, take an interest in the locale that they're in (who doesn't love when someone talks nice about where they live), and maybe give a short explanation of the next song's story (I say maybe because there's a thin line between this and talking too much). It's also important how they act when they're playing. If you can tell they're having fun, you're more likely to have fun. You can tell when they're forcing it. So overall, they're comfortable (really, doing what they love) and they want to share this thing they love with you, and make you want to love it too. (That wasn't meant to rhyme, what can I say.)
There you go. I really should read a little. Peace out homes.
Current song: Jeremy Messersmith - Violet
